Greensgrow Farm in Philadelphia is hiring a Demonstration Farmer for their main location in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia.
The Demonstration Farmer will be responsible for all food production operations for a half-acre urban farm, including, but not limited to high tunnel production, intensive field plantings, IPM systems, composting and waste reduction strategies, and tool and equipment maintenance.
Demonstration Farmer will also work with Greensgrow Farm Manager to advance Greensgrow’s sustainability and education projects, including, but not limited to green roofs, stormwater management, recycling, beekeeping, and coordinating site visits from schools and other organizations.
Required
2-3 years organic farm management experience
Experience with intensive high-tunnel production
Excellent writing and public speaking skills
Excellent communication and team-working skills
Drivers License and excellent driving record
Willingness to work some weekends for special eventsPreferred
Carpentry, plumbing, and electrical systems knowledge

Philadelphia. The produce from this ½ acre farm goes to weekly farmstands,
donations to food cupboards, and to Mariposa Food Coop. Most of the
produce goes directly into the Mill Creek neighborhood of West
Philadelphia, which has limited access to affordable, healthy food. We
share the property with a diverse array of community gardeners. For more

practices and hand-labor, which means we need a lot of dedicated hands out
in the field planting, picking, and weeding. We work with hundreds of

with those who come back regularly. If you are interested in working with
us on a regular basis and committing to getting more involved than casual
volunteers, this internship is for you.Market Apprenticehelps with harvest, setup of farmstand, customer service,
market outreach, produce sales, market inventory, clean up, and other
relevant tasks including field work.
Apprenticeship/training would start in early June. The farmstand is open
June 16th – Thanksgiving. Saturday markets are held at the farm 11-2,
Wednesday markets are at 52nd and Haverford (2 blocks from the farm at The
Food Trust’s Haddington market), 1-5. Harvest takes place the morning of
the market.We request a minimum commitment of at least 1 of the market days and may
give preference to those available both days/the whole season.In order to qualify for this internship you must meet the following
requirements:
· Ability to work well with a diverse group of people
· Reliability and flexibility
· Ability to make a serious time commitment
· Willingness to do farm work in extreme weather conditions
· Ability to lift 40 lbs

Because we are primarily grant and donation funded, we cannot offer pay,

Farm Education Apprenticeship
NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2012 SEASON!
The Farm Education Apprentices are involved in a multidisciplinary program where they are both farm staff and farm educators. They will work directly with our farm manager and farm educators to participate in all aspects of the 2 acre farm: seeding, greenhouse production, soil preparation and amending, composting, cultivating, harvesting, weeding, animal care, fruit and orchard management, and tractor work.
Since our farm is only in its third season, apprentices will also have the opportunity to create and develop new facets of the farm, such as helping us start beekeeping, build grape arbors and orchards, expand flower production, research and implement alternative composting methods, or other ideas.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
During summer camp, apprentices will lead a variety of farm-based activities and educational programs for campers of all ages, while also assisting in maintaining the daily operations of the farm, and various agricultural projects around camp.
When camp is not in session, Jewish Farm School and Eden Village run a variety of educational programs on the site and the farm, including Sunday farm volunteer days, a fall harvest festival coinciding with Sukkot, and other skills workshops. Apprentices will be the lead farm educators for all of these programs.
APPRENTICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES:
Weekly seminars in organic, small scale agriculture.
Trainings in Jewish environmental education, including theTeva Seminar.
Participation in the Hudson Valley C.R.A.F.T. Program, a network for young organic farmers.
Participation in various on-site workshops, such as natural building and herbal medicine.
Field trips to various organic and educational farms in the area.
Ideal candidates will:

Henry Got Crops! CSA, a partnership between Saul High School, Weavers Way, and Weavers Way Community Programs is looking for farm educator volunteers for the 2012 season. Educators will work unpaid, volunteering for at least 1.5 hours a week and will provide assistance in our hands on education program at a 2.5 farm in North West Philadelphia. There are direct paybacks to participating in this program : volunteers will learn how to write farm education curriculum, lead 9th-12th students in work sessions, and learn basic farming practices, amongst other things. The Weavers Way Community Programs (WWCP) Farm Education is a dynamic, interactive program that teaches children and youth from varied backgrounds about urban farming. We operate at three (3) unique sites, allowing us to develop and implement innovative curriculum that serves students from a variety of backgrounds. Farm-based learning bridges the gap for children of different socio-economic status.
Weavers Way Community Programs (WWCP) was created in 2007 to expand the community enrichment work of Weavers Way Co-op. WWCP is a member of the Mt. Airy Community Services Corporation, which has 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. The largest components of WWCP are the School Marketplace Program, Farm Education, and the Mt. Airy Bike Collective.
Henry Got Crops CSA at Saul High School for Agricultural Sciences: The interns will work with the Henry Got Crops farm educator to host education activities for 140 high school students, including the incoming freshman class. Interns will work with farm educator to teach students how to operate a CSA, in addition to specific vegetable production skills. The interns in turn will learn these skills themselves. This is a great opportunity for hands-on experience with urban farm education and production.
WWCP’s farm education program operates in conjunction with the Weavers Way Farms and Weavers Way Co-op. Weavers Way Co-op is a 4,800-member community-owned retail food market, with locations in Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill.
Requirements:
Some prior experience in gardening and environmental education preferred.
Must have a good sense of humor, strong work ethic, and willingness to get dirty.
You should be able to work under adverse conditions (heat, humidity, cold, rain) and be able to lift 50 lbs, preferably at the same time.
Access to a vehicle is very helpful but not necessary.
Intern must have a current child abuse and criminal history clearance (or apply for clearances when selected for internship).Specific Tasks:
1. Assist with both farm education and production. Total hours per week devoted to each task will vary based on weather, scheduling, and other variables.
2. Help lead educational groups and activities.
3. Help manage volunteers who visit our sites to assist with the farming and education.
4. Assist with farm production, including work in the greenhouse, planting, weeding, harvesting, and marketing.
5. Learn about the 100 varieties of vegetables and flowers we grow, including pest management and season extension.
6. Engage with members of the Weavers Way community via community outreach events.
7. Assist with staffing WWCP’s farmers market, helping to harvest, set up for, and sell our produce.
8. Participate in weekly farmer meetings and WWCP staff meetings.
